Hi girls!
I think we are off to a great start!! I know we only had a little bit of time in class to discuss Iran and their recent revolution. Like I told you, this past summer, Iran held elections. Many felt that the elections were 'fixed' (cheated) because Achmadinijad (their crazy president) won again. To help you get an idea of what this revolution was all about, I'm including a link to a video. This video was created by journalist who was in Iran during the protests. You'll see how hard it is for her to record the protests (the government makes videos and pictures illegal) and interview protesters. You'll see that many of the protesters faces are blurry because they (just like Marji's mother in the book!) are scared of being seen by the government and imprisoned.
This is a long-ish video (about 20 minutes) so please make sure you start it when you have the time to sit through the whole thing. It's very very interesting and I think it'll help you really understand what Marji's parents went through during the Islamic Revolution in 1979. A couple words that may help you while you're watching this:
1. Mousavi is the name of the guy who was running agains Achmadinijad who many felt should have won the election.
2. The "Basij" are the secret police that beat up the students and scare the protesters.
You ASSIGNMENT for this week is to watch this video and to comment how it helped you understand the book better. Please have your comment posted by Friday.
Can't wait to read your genius!!
HERE IS THE LINK TO THE VIDEO.
